Frequently asked questions
On what roads, properties, and footpaths can I operate a machine?
This is an important question, as it doesn’t matter how long the machinery is on a public road or footpath, it could lead to fines from your local council.
Whether you’re in Townsville, Cairns the Burdekin, the Hinchinbrook, Charters Towers or any other LGA area, it’s important to consult your local council about any permits that may be required to operate lifts, cranes and other machinery on public thoroughfares.
There may be financial penalties involved plus there can be major consequences if there is a collision between your machine hire and another vehicle or a pedestrian. You are liable for the safe and correct operation of any machinery you hire so understanding where it can be operated and how to safely move it through public places like footpaths and roads is essential.
What are the procedures for operating machinery near power lines?
Obviously, there are very important safety precautions that need to be taken when using lifts and other machinery near power lines, as any accidents or breaches of safety can lead to severe injuries and fatalities. There are stringent standards put in place to protect workers and pedestrians and you must be aware of them and follow them for safety reasons.
The first step is contacting the owners of the power lines prior to any work commencing, in the case of Townsville that would be Ergon Energy. They will provide you with a list of the safety standards to adhere to, plus they can install tiger tails to the lines which are clearly marked coverings that alert machinery users to the proximity of lines carrying live electricity. You’ll also need to report your plans and how close to the power lines you will be operating to Ergon. If the machinery is going to come within three metres of live power lines, the power will need to be shut off at your expense.
When you’re working near power lines at a distance between three metres and 6.4 meters, a spotter will be required to advise the operator of the machinery when they are getting too close. If you’re working further away from power lines, you mustn’t encroach on these live sources of electricity and stay at least 6.4 metres away from them.
How do I know which machinery is right for my project?

How Far in Advance Do I Need to Book My Equipment Hire?
While we maintain a vast inventory of equipment, to guarantee the availability of a specific item, we recommend booking at least a week in advance. This ensures we can meet your project requirements and carry out necessary safety checks. However, for more specialised equipment or during peak periods, it’s advisable to reach out even earlier.
Do You Allow Self-Operation or Do All Hires Come with Machine Operators?
At Global Hire & Services, the safety of our clients is paramount. For certain types of equipment, we recommend certified machine operators to ensure optimal operation and safety. However, we do have a range of equipment that experienced professionals can self-operate after completing our standard safety training. It’s always best to ask about specific equipment requirements when booking.
What Safety Measures Are in Place for the Equipment?
At Global Hire & Services, all our equipment undergoes regular maintenance checks and meets stringent safety standards. Additionally, we provide comprehensive safety documentation and operational guidance to our clients.
What Factors Should I Consider When Selecting Equipment for My Project?
Start by evaluating the scope, scale and intricacies of your project. For instance, a large-scale construction might necessitate heavy-duty machinery like stick booms or rough terrain scissor lifts, while a warehouse task could be carried out with an electric scissor lift or diesel forklift. Additionally, factors such as the terrain, project duration and any site-specific challenges can guide your decision.
At Global Hire and Services, our dedicated team is always ready to offer insights and advice. Based on your project scope, timeline and specific needs, we will suggest the most suitable equipment. Our goal is to provide solutions that optimise efficiency and ensure successful project completion.
What Are the Advantages of Hiring Equipment?
Hiring equipment offers several advantages over purchasing it. It eliminates the need for significant capital investments, allowing businesses to allocate funds more effectively. Additionally, hiring ensures you always have access to the latest machinery without worrying about depreciation or maintenance costs. This flexibility enables businesses to scale up or down based on project demands, ensuring optimal efficiency.
Do You Offer Training for Equipment Operation?
Absolutely! For equipment that requires specialised knowledge or for clients unfamiliar with certain machinery, we provide hands-on training sessions. Ensuring our clients are confident and informed helps us maintain the safety and integrity of all projects.
What Happens If the Equipment Malfunctions?
While we maintain our equipment to the highest standards, we’re also practical. In the event of a malfunction, we offer prompt support. Depending on the situation, we’ll either provide onsite repair assistance or replace the equipment to minimise downtime. Call us for more details.
Do you need a lisence to operate this machinery?
Any operators of our machinery need to have the EWPA yellow card which validates that these workers have completed the relevant training and have the knowledge and skills to safely operate mobile elevating work platforms.
The EWPA yellow is a nationally recognised certification and ensures that operators have been trained under nationwide industry standards so they have the best possible skills and knowledge of how to safely operate this machinery.
It’s vital that only workers with this certification operate our machinery on your job site or you could be liable for any damage or injuries that may occur while the machinery is under the control of an operator that is not trained, skilled or qualified under the EWPA yellow card.
