Frequently asked questions

This is an important question, as it doesn’t matter how long the machinery is on a public road or footpath, it could lead to fines from your local council.

Whether you’re in Townsville, Cairns the Burdekin, the Hinchinbrook, Charters Towers or any other LGA area, it’s important to consult your local council about any permits that may be required to operate lifts, cranes and other machinery on public thoroughfares.

There may be financial penalties involved plus there can be major consequences if there is a collision between your machine hire and another vehicle or a pedestrian. You are liable for the safe and correct operation of any machinery you hire so understanding where it can be operated and how to safely move it through public places like footpaths and roads is essential.

Obviously, there are very important safety precautions that need to be taken when using lifts and other machinery near power lines, as any accidents or breaches of safety can lead to severe injuries and fatalities. There are stringent standards put in place to protect workers and pedestrians and you must be aware of them and follow them for safety reasons.

The first step is contacting the owners of the power lines prior to any work commencing, in the case of Townsville that would be Ergon Energy. They will provide you with a list of the safety standards to adhere to, plus they can install tiger tails to the lines which are clearly marked coverings that alert machinery users to the proximity of lines carrying live electricity. You’ll also need to report your plans and how close to the power lines you will be operating to Ergon. If the machinery is going to come within three metres of live power lines, the power will need to be shut off at your expense.

When you’re working near power lines at a distance between three metres and 6.4 meters, a spotter will be required to advise the operator of the machinery when they are getting too close. If you’re working further away from power lines, you mustn’t encroach on these live sources of electricity and stay at least 6.4 metres away from them.

Any operators of our machinery need to have the EWPA yellow card which validates that these workers have completed the relevant training and have the knowledge and skills to safely operate mobile elevating work platforms.

The EWPA yellow is a nationally recognised certification and ensures that operators have been trained under nationwide industry standards so they have the best possible skills and knowledge of how to safely operate this machinery.

It’s vital that only workers with this certification operate our machinery on your job site or you could be liable for any damage or injuries that may occur while the machinery is under the control of an operator that is not trained, skilled or qualified under the EWPA yellow card.

We can help you choose the right machinery if you’re not sure which one you need. Our team can either work with your dedicated manager responsible for risk assessment and planning. If you do not have a risk assessment manager, we can assist with contract hire where we provide guidelines for your entire project that ensures all machinery operation is carried out under current industry standards, guidelines and regulations.
